vacation. I know he was at the PGA show in Orlando last week. Only thing I can say

Subj:  Notes from the 13 November Open Forum

Here are some of the key points Fred Heuvel presented at the Open Forum
hosted at the Clubhouse on 13 November.

 *  Work will begin on the old golf courses after the 1st of January 2008, to be done
by 1 April 2008. 

 *  When completed, there will be 27 holes that will remain open for the duration.

 *  The number of outings normally hosted during the week will be curtailed by half. 
There will no longer be more than one outing per day, and they will all be scheduled
in the afternoons to allow for normal member play in the mornings. 

 *  The 3 nines will be operated independently as A-B-C. If you start on A, you will
turn to play B. If you start on B, you will turn to play C. If you start on C, you
will turn to play A. 

 *  They are expecting little impact on the current members and groups, although
there may need to be some adjustments to when groups tee off. 

Course Modifications:  See the Parks Modifications (263kb PDF)

 *  Basically, the front of Applewood goes away along with Hole #1 and #2 on Parks.

 *  The front of Parks will be modified as follows:

    *  Hole #9 Applewood will be modified to become #1 Parks.
    *  The tee will just in front of the gravel road that crosses the current #9 Applewood 
fairway and played as a 375-380 yd. par 4 back towards the old #8 Applewood green.
    *  The new #1 Parks green will be the old #8 Applewood green.
    *  The current #3 Parks will become #2, with new tees placed across the creek
back in the woods, played as a straight-away par 4. 
    *  The remainder of the front of Parks will continue around, with holes numbered
one less than they are now. 
    *  After playing #8 (used to be #9), we will play the old #9 Applewood green as
a par 3 from 135-170 yards.

Just in case you were wondering, I played today and the greens on Parks were cut and tolerable.  
They were doing the fairways and tees on Apple, yesterday and today.  I'm guessing they are 
going to start on Parks fairways and tees tomorrow.  I think the greens will be in decent shape 
by the weekend.  #14 is still bad but give it time.  

Anyone opposed to having a Ryder Cup format next weekend?  Just something different than the 
same ole game.

For those of you that are captains, is there something on the stat sheet that you'd like to 
see.  For me, I'd like to see everyone's last score and how many birdies & eagles they had.  
That could give me an idea of how you're playing.  I'm open for any suggestions.

GRUESOME  GOLF ON JULY 4 - There will be Gruesome golf on Sat, Jul 1, 
Sun, Jul 2 and Tuesday, July 4. Sign-up list is in the Gruesome book.

GRUESOME OUTING @ UNIV of  MARYLAND - Fred Comings is putting together 
an outing at the Univ of Maryland Golf Course on July 6. Cost: 
Approximately $40 (includes cart). Show time: 12:30pm. Tee off is: 
1:00pm. Play will be from the GOLD tees. The signup sheet is in the 
Gruesome book.  You must be signed up no later than Jun 30.

FOURTEEN (14) CLUB LIMIT - It has been brought to my attention that we 
have players who are exceeding the 14-club maximum limit. We are playing 
by USGA rules so I'd like to remind everyone what the USGA rule says on 
the maximum number of clubs allowed per round:

RULE: 4-4. Maximum of 14 Clubs
  a.  Selection and Addition of Clubs. The player must start a 
stipulated round with /not more than 14 clubs/. He is limited to the 
clubs thus selected for that round except that, if he started with fewer 
than 14 clubs, he may add any number provided his total number /does not 
exceed 14/. The addition of a club or clubs must not unduly delay play 
(Rule 6-7) and the player must not add or borrow any club selected for 
play by any other person playing on the course.
  b.  Partners May Share Clubs. Partners may share clubs, provided that 
the total number of clubs carried by the partners so sharing does not 
exceed 14.

/PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 4-4a or b.  REGARDLESS OF NUMBER OF EXCESS 
CLUBS CARRIED/:
Match Play - At the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is 
discovered, the state of the match is adjusted by deducting one hole for 
each hole at which a breach occurred. Maximum deduction per round: Two 
holes.
Stroke Play - Two strokes for each hole at which a breach occurred: 
maximum penalty per round: Four strokes.

  c.  Excess Club Declared Out Of Play. Any club or clubs carried or 
used in breach of Rule 4-3a(iii) or Rule 4-4 must be declared out of 
play by the player to his opponent in match play or his marker or a 
fellow-competitor in stroke play immediately upon discovery that a 
breach has occurred. The player must not use the club or clubs for the 
remainder of the stipulated round.

/PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 4-4c/:  Disqualification.

I would ask each "team captain" prior to tee off to ensure that no 
member of his team has more than the maximum allowed 14 clubs.

    * TEE-TIMES FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND (May 27-29) - We will need
      callers tomorrow Monday, May 22 for Sat,  May 27; Tuesday, May 23
      for Sun, May 28; and Wednesday, May 24 for Mon, May 29. If you
      have the opportunity (besides calling for a tee-time tomorrow
      morning), go to the golf course and sign up for a tee-time for
      Mon, May 29, Memorial Day. I realize that may pose a problem for
      some of you but if we don't get some folks on the sign-up list we
      will need a max effort on Wed, May 24, because any tee-times we
      get for Mon (Memorial Day) will be gotten by callers. Understand
      that the other groups at Ft Meade are in the same situation as 
      the Gruesome.  Don't be surprised if the tee-times are spread out.
      
    * CONNIE ISLER - Connie Isler is signed up for Sat/Sun, May 27 & 28.
      Let's do our best to make her feel welcome.

    * TEE-TIMES FOR WEEKEND OF SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP (JUN 3-4) - There
      will be Gruesome play on a limited basis for that weekend.
      Remember one course will be closed both Sat/Sun for tournament
      play. We will still need folks to signup for a tee-time on
      Sat/Sun, May 27 & 28 or call on Mon, May 29. At this point you may
      have realized that calling for a tee-time on May 29 will be
      alittle difficult if you are playing golf that day. I realize that
      will be alittle difficult but unless we get some callers we might
      not get any tee-times.

    * One of the problems we are experiencing is that even though we may
      have enough folks signed up on the starter's signup list we are so
      far down the list that if we don't have any callers, we could see
      tee-times later in the morning and spread out. Take this past Sat,
      May 20. Fred McLeay was the first person, to sign up for the
      Gruesome at 6:50am. When I signed up for the 2d Gruesome tee-time
      at 7:05am, Fred was 21st on the list and I was 23d. Bobby told me
      that we will need callers or we may have some problems with
      getting tee-times together.

    * Dave Riley will published the tee-times for Memorial Day weekend
      (Gruesome book and email) and I will publish the times for Jun 3-4
      when I return on May 30. Fred McLeay will do the admin for the
      Memorial Day weekend.

We will have a problem with Sunday. We are short 1 tee-time. We have 19 
players signed up (18 members + 1 alternate). I already inquired about 
our chances of getting 1 more tee-time or the possibility of squeezing 
in an additional group. I was told our chances are "slim" since we have 
the last four groups on the front of Parks (double start course) unless 
some other group cancels. I will again ask on Sunday if we can squeeze 
in another group but there's no guarentee.

Assuming we can't squeeze in another group, we will have to cut down the 
Gruesome signup list to 16 players. As I see it we have two options:

OPTION #1: The golfers who got the tee-times are four of the sixteen 
players. The remaining 12 players are selected using seniority within 
the Gruesome. If the majority decides for this option, a "seniority 
list" will need to be established.

or

OPTION #2: The golfers who got the tee-times are four of the sixteen 
players. The remaining 12 are chosen by random drawing (i.e., put all 
player's names (minus the four who got the tee-times)in a hat and draw 
12 names.

I understand there might be additional options that we could look at. 
But given the short timeframe I would like you to consider only the 
above 2 options for this weekend. I would like _only_ those Gruesome 
members scheduled to play on Sunday to vote for one of the options. 
Below is a list of those players who are scheduled to play on Sunday. 
Reply by email to me no later than Thursday, Jun 9, 6:00pm which option 
you vote for. Just state either "Option #1 or Option #2." I will publish 
the results early Friday morning (Jun 10). Please vote early.
