GRUESOME 2000 – THE YEAR IN REVIEW

The Gruesome welcomed three new members during 2000 – Neil Doherty, Tim Kyllonen, and Ernie Woodruff.  Bill Knapp returned to regular Gruesome play after a couple years absence.  We bade farewell to Charlie Wineke.  At end of year our Gruesome membership stood at 43.

Gruesome members and guests played 2,338 rounds at the Courses Fort Meade during 2000 – 20 fewer rounds than we played in 1999.  We also played 57 rounds at Eagles Landing (10) (arranged by Jim Stergiou), Marlton (12) (arranged by Tom Busey), Worthington Manor (16) (arranged by Tom Busey), and Leisure World (19) (arranged by yours truly).  JR Patterson set up the Williamsburg trip for 12 guys with rounds at Colonial, Stonehouse, and Royal New Kent.  Money winnings and losses only were recorded for Gruesome play at Eagles Landing, Marlton, Worthington Manor, Leisure World, and the Williamsburg trip.  Some number of other rounds was played at other various and sundry courses by smaller groups for which I have no records or data.  There were four 9-hole matches played at Fort Meade – three on Applewood and one on Parks.  Among the 18-hole rounds, three were played on the backs of Applewood and Parks; two were played on the front of Applewood and back of Parks; and one was played on the front of Parks and back of Applewood.

The number of Gruesome playing days decreased by 11 from 1999 to 2000.  The Gruesome played on 157 days during 1999; there were 146 playing days in 2000.

For the 2,338 rounds played during 2000 the Gruesome compiled an overall scoring average of 80.7 which was .3 higher than our 1999 scoring average of 80.4.  Play on Applewood course accounted for 977 rounds (9 more than in 1999) on 59 days plus three 9-hole matches.  We played 1,294 rounds (96 less than in 1999) on 77 days on Parks course and one 9-hole match.  Sixty-seven rounds were played on 6 days on disparate courses, e.g., front of Applewood and back of Parks.  The Gruesome scoring average on Applewood was 81.2 compared to 80.9 for 1999.  On Parks it was 80.3 compared to 80.0 for 1999.  Twenty-seven Gruesome members averaged better than 80.7 for the year; 16 recorded annual averages above 80.7.

Gruesome play at Fort Meade produced 3,191 birdies during 2000 resulting in a birdie-per-round ratio of 1.36.  For 1999 the ratio was 1.37 based on 2,358 rounds and 3,244 birdies.  On Applewood course we recorded 1,319 birdies over 977 rounds – a ratio of 1.35 birdies per round.  On Parks course we logged 1,783 birdies over 1,294 rounds for a ratio of 1.38 birdies per round.  On the 6 days we played disparate courses there were 89 birdies over 67 rounds – a ratio of 1.33 birdies per round.  Another 24 birdies were recorded during the three 9-hole matches on Applewood and 18 additional birdies were recorded during the one 9-hole match on Parks.  On a per-round basis (142 18-hole matches plus four 9-hole match days) and not taking account of eagles, the Gruesome averaged 22.1 birdies per round.

For the away rounds for which I have data, there were 19 birdies at Marlton, 16 at Worthington Manor, and 27 birdies and 3 eagles at Leisure World.  There were 34 birdies in the 36 rounds played at Williamsburg.

There were 53 eagles scored during 2000 – 3 fewer than during 1999.  Applewood course produced 31 eagles – the same number as 1999, and Parks course yielded 22 eagles.  The hole most often eagled was #9 Applewood with 16 followed by #5 Parks with 9.  The first hole on Parks and #14 Applewood each produced 7 eagles.  #18 Applewood was eagled 4 times.  Interestingly #4 Applewood was eagled 3 times by Ames, Ladny, and Leith, all by shots from the fairway.  There were two holes-in-one during 2000: Rod Frank on #10 Applewood and Ed Lundgren on #8 Parks

The lowest single day scoring average occurred on Applewood on August 26th – 77.4 – with 27 guys.  On Parks the lowest single day scoring average was 77.6 on April 6th with 17 guys and again on September 3rd with 15 guys.  On Applewood the second lowest day scoring average was 78.5 on September 23rd with 24 guys.  On Parks the second lowest day scoring average was 77.7 on August 19th with 24 guys.

The highest single day scoring average was a hide-your-face 85.6 on May 30th on Parks course.  Ten nameless guys contributed to that stellar effort.  The highest single day average on Applewood occurred on February 21st with 9 guys – 85.2.

Only 9 guys improved their averages from 1999 to 2000.  The rest of us took on varying degrees of stink.

There were 55 sub-par rounds shot during the year as compared to 59 during 1999.  Frank had the low round for the year – a 65 with four birdies and 2 eagles.  In all Frank had 8 rounds in the 60s that included a 66 with 6 birdies and four rounds of 67.  JR Patterson had a 67 with four birdies and an eagle.  “Captain” Alder playing as a first pick had a 69 with 6 birides.  Dag Alstad had one of the sub-par rounds – a 70 with four birdies.  Those who shot sub-par rounds and the number of times achieved were:

                        Ailor                 1                                  Jones                  1

Alder                2                                  McCorkle          1

Hill                    2

The highest round during the year?  Let’s not get into that just as we shouldn’t mention the name of the team captain who shot 91.

The most birdies made by one person in a single round during 2000 was 7 – Steve Comings who managed a smooth 73.  Many 6-birdie rounds were shot.  Frank had 7 eagles during the year; JR Patterson had 6.

So far as consistency goes there are those who play within a range and there are those who play within the universe.  Over 7 rounds Bray shot 75 to 82 – a spread of 7.  Cline had a spread of 8 over 6 rounds.  Frank kept it within a 9-stroke range (68 to 77).  Dixon and Leith were 10 strokes between their low and high scores.  The honor for worst spread goes to Greenberg.  He shot everything from 66 to 88 – a 22-stroke spread.  Ames (70-91), Ladny (75-96), and Romero (73-94) had 21-stroke differences.  Busey (72-92), Hill (70-90), Madrid (73-93), SR Patterson (73-93), and Wilhelm (71-91) spread their low and high rounds by 20 strokes.

The most birdies made in one day was 54 and 1 eagle with 27 guys on August 26th on Applewood.  Three guys did not contribute to the birdie production that day.  The Gruesome scoring average that day was 77.4.  The next best was 48 birds with 24 guys on April 1st on Parks when the Gruesome average was 78.2.  Four guys didn’t contribute.  The best birdie-per-man ratio day was September 7th on Applewood when 14 guys had 31 birdies for a ratio of 2.21 per man, and the Gruesome average 79.3.  The best birdie-per-man ratio on Parks was on April 6th when 17 guys logged 31 birdies for a 2.06 ratio and the Gruesome averaged 77.6.

There were entire teams that had no birdies:  threesomes of Alder, Wood, and SR Patterson; Soderstrom, Fred Comings, and Ladny; and Ladny, Ladny, and Langendorf.  Even two foursomes got into the no-birdie round act:  JR, Busey, Ladny, and Romero and Jones, Ames, Langendorf, and Buczek.  On the other hand, some teams made bunches of birdies.  Bray (4), Hill (4), Jones (4), and Jimmy Romero (2) had 14 birdies one day.  Greenberg (6), JR (4), Jones (3), and Romero (0) had 13 birdies along with an eagle (JR).  The most birdies made by a threesome was 10 twice:  Greenberg (5), Ailor (2), and Wood (3) and Frank (5), Bray (2), and Ladny (3).

The big payday of the year was shared by Greenberg, McLeay, Busey, and Madrid -- $38 a man.  The big losers day went to Greenberg, Hoffmann, and Karkos who forked over $12 each.
