Rip G. Rice

[Home]

In his early college years before World War II, Rip led the Stardust Melodiers, a swing-dance band at what is now the University of Texas at Arlington.  While in the Army and prior to departing for the European Theater of Operations (D + 60), Rip played in several service dance bands. After V-J Day, he played in two jazz units at Camp Stoneman, Ca., welcoming returning troops to the States and playing dances at officers clubs.  After returning to civilian life in 1946, Rip joined then became the leader of the Music Makers, a 10-piece dance-swing band in the Washington, DC area. He also played in several small combos in the area.

In 1955, Rip decided to put music on the back burner while he concentrated on developing a professional career and helping to raise his family.  That hiatus lasted 49 years, until 1994, when he came out of musical hibernation. Today, Rip plays in the Rockville Concert Band, the Rock-'n-ville Swing Band, the Columbia Jazz Ensemble, the Starvation Army Band, and the Rockville Dixie Rascals.  About 4 years ago, with a little arm twisting, Rip agreed to become the Director of the Olney Jazz Troupe, a 20-piece Big Band based in Olney, MD.

Professionally, the venerable Head Rascal is a consultant in many of the fields of Ozone Technology -- generating and applying ozone for beneficial purposes at ground levels, applying ozone for drinking water, bottled water, wastewater, swimming pool and cooling tower treatments, and also food processing with ozone.

The Head Rascal was born in New York City on April 19th, 1924  --  the same day, year and town as was Henry Mancini !!     (Do you think the nurse may have switched them??)
